Cool, Calm, and Collected
Purchasing a new home is a big endeavor. Furnishing a new home is a lot of work (fun! but effort is definitely involved). Now, imagine doing all of this while planning an international wedding, and both you and your spouse have demanding professional lives and are constantly traveling for work. Yeah, okay, that’s too much. Enter Outline Interiors.
We were commissioned to work with this couple to bring their vision for a calm and serene interior to life. They had already purchased a few pieces, but needed helping pulling everything together. Knowing they wanted a clean and neutral palette with soft touches of color and glam sprinkled in….we were ready to roll!
When entering the home, you immeditatley encounter a formal living and dining area where most people think, ‘ok - what do we do with this space? Are we ever going to sit here?’ With that in mind, we focused on creating a seating space that the client actually utilizes when entertaining, all the while making it cohesive with the dining area. Sculptural chairs surrounding a glass top coffee table with a starburst base are the focal point of the formal living space. Obviously, adding in some tall greenery was a must. We used the same rug material to ground both the formal living and the dining spaces - but mixed it up with contrasting shapes. Now, let’s talk about this window treatment for a sec. The clients requested privacy, but also wanted the ability to let light in and keeps things bright. These vertical solar shades are one of my favorite elements. They’re so architectural, and they also give crazy height to this already tall space.
The Family Room and Kitchen area is usually the heart of any home, and this situation is no different. In an effort to keep this space equal parts chic and comfortable, we created a neutral, textural palette that is inviting to all. Tall sheer drapery fabricated from indoor / outdoor fabric for durability hang from acrylic rods with polished brass hardware. The drapery hardware is truly the jewelry of the room. A large round coffee table anchors the space with flanking lounge chairs and movable ottomans. Flexibility is key in creating usable spaces for groups of people to enjoy.
The Master Bedroom in this home is truly a retreat for this couple. Textural wallpaper crafted from actual stone flecks anchors the headboard wall, while creating a fun, reflective focal point. Hanging pendants flanking the headboard are a nice change from your traditional bedside table lamp. Custom blackout curtains were a must-have. We created these from a geometric print fabric with a subtle sheen, adding welcome softness to the space.
Now that we’ve covered the interior design…..let’s focus on the exterior design - the roofdeck! This client LOVES to entertain, and when you live in Chicago - you’ve got to take advantage of the small window of time when one can actually enjoy the outdoors. Under the trellis, we hung string lights and installed wall planters filled with various greenery to create a more completed design. The large table is perfect for dining al fresco. We created a comfy lounge space, including a small fire column to enjoy more casual gatherings that can last through the night. Having been to the client’s lovely housewarming party, I can attest to this space being a real crowd-pleaser.
